STREET FOOD IN ARGENTINA
Traditional Argentinian gaucho (cowboy) culture revolves around one thing: the asado - or barbecue and occur in the urban streets of Buenos Aires as much as in the surrounding countryside. Meat is almost always served with the tangy garlic green salsa of chimichurri, which is often used as a marinade too.
Meats - most frequently beef steak, ribs and sausages, as well as a whole lamb or pig - are grilled on the open flame.
“You might like bondiola al limón - roasted tender pork cooked with much lemon. For the non-carnivores, provoleta (a type of oregano and chilli-topped pulled-curd cheese inspired by Italian provolone) is grilled to perfection, creating a crispy-yet-gooey, sweet-yet-smokey treat.”
The easiest on-the-go street food in Argentina to eat on your tour, is the empanada, a deep-fried or baked pastry that is usually filled with a savoury treat of stewed and spiced meat and /or vegetables. The secret to knowing the filling your empanada is by reading the markings or folds of the pastry. Whilst big, juicy steaks are what Argentina is renowned for, you may also wish to try the matambre arrollado, which is a thinly sliced cut of beef stuffed with veggies, eggs and herbs, which was once used as a matambre, or ‘hunger killer’ appetizer.
Argentinians loves their choripan, a style of wood or coal cooked beef and pork sausage, and served between crusty bread with chimichurri, or salsa criolla (a mix of finely chopped onion, red peppers, tomato, garlic, parsley, olive oil and white wine vinegar). Whilst choripan and pancho (an Argentine hot dog) are the common man’s sandwich, lomito - made with flash-grilled steak - is considered its flush street food friend.
Argentine desserts are to die for!
The deliciously thick and sticky caramel of dulce de leche, or milk jam, is made from boiled condensed milk. It’s perfect when served with the national favorite of helado (icecream), or as a filling for the country’s most popular biscuit, the crumbly, shortbread of alfajores.
Meanwhile, garrapiñada, a type of sweet candied and vanilla nuts cooked over hot coals, are better for sweet-toothed grazers.
Another way to keep your energy up while you are traveling in Argentina, is to grab yourself a yerba mate! A herbal, caffeine drink and Argentina’s coffee alternative, this is drunk from a bottle gourd that is fitted with a metal straw.
