The Valdés Peninsula is home to one of the most important ecological diversity in the world, attracting colonies of whales, pinguins, sea lions, daulphins all year round. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. With 150 km of coastline, it was the first Marine Park created in the Gulf Argentina San Jose in the late 1960s. In 1972, Jacques Cousteau came to Puerto Piramides aboard his Calypso, he saw a group of whales coming exclusively to Golfo San José to mate. At that time, some of the divers saw the potential of the area and started to take tourists on their boats. The first Whale Watching tour company was then created. Currently the city has six hotels, fifteen lodges and two campgrounds.
